From 20-24 February inclusive, Chapter, in Canton, is sharing a week of free art activities in the shape of family films, art and craft workshops and exhibitions.

The art centre will also be offering a free packed lunch for children to replace what would've been received during term-time in school, with the main aim of supporting families throughout the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

These packed lunches will include a range of meat, vegetarian and vegan options to suit all appetites and cater for specific dietary requirements on request.

Chapter is a national centre for contemporary arts and culture, set-up by a number of artists in 1971.

It's a hub for production and presentation of world-class, inventive and compelling work, and commissions and produces exhibitions of the very best in national and international art.

Each day this half-term will start off with a free drop in arts and crafts workshop, perfect for all young creatives and crafty-curious kids, from 10am-12 noon. This will be offered on a first-come-first served basis, lasting around 15-20 minutes each.

Chapter already provides a free family film every Saturday morning, however this week, this offer is extended, so that families get a chance to see great releases from the past few years in the comfortable and welcoming setting of the cinema:

  • 20 & 23 February: Encanto (U)
  • 21 & 25 February: The Lego Movie (U)
  • 22 & 24 February: Sing (U)

Alongside a collection of free films, Chapter will be presenting their new releases of affordable cinema, including 'Marcel The Shell With Shoes On', of which is PG-rated.

Marcel is an adorable mollusc who lives with his grandmother Connie. When a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his AirBnb and makes a film about them, Marcel receives adoration from millions around the world, but it brings unforeseen dangers amongst the hope of finding his long-lost family.

Tickets will be £6/£4 concessions, with the film being shown at a number of different times throughout the week. The times are:

  • Monday, 20 February: 6pm
  • Tuesday, 21 February: 3pm
  • Tuesday, 21 February: 5.40pm
  • Wednesday, 22 February: 2.30pm

Perfect for green-fingered people of all ages, the Canton Community Gardeners are back at Chapter on Saturday 25 February for Seed Swap Saturday, to meet the community and swap seeds with little and big gardeners alike.

Chapter’s exhibitions are, like a lot of things at the centre, completely free entry with no need to book.

On display for this half-term is The Infinity Card, the new exhibition by Leo Robinson that presents oracles, musical scores and objects.

Also being shown will be Seo Hye Lee: [sound of subtitles] as part of the Art in the Bar programme, which looks at the history and visuals of subtitles.
